Many months ago, I witnessed an online debate about the word “queer”: Is it a slur? Has it been reclaimed? Are straight people allowed to say it? Who’s included under that umbrella?
Later, I saw another similar debate in another space. And another. And another.
What fascinated me most was to see how many otherwise similar people had radically different views on this word. So I started asking people about it—listening not only to their own views of the word, but also what they believed about others’ views. Did they understand why other people disagreed with them or not?
That led me down a truly fascinating rabbit hole where I discovered that a lot of the stuff people believe about “queer”—and each other—is wrong.
And that led me to a challenge: Could I make an engaging video to change people’s perceptions and help us understand each other better on a topic as sensitive as people’s identity labels?
After months of listening and research, here’s the result. I hope you find it helpful.
