Christianity and LGBTQ

Christianity & LGBTQ Issues

Of all the issues I write and speak about, I am most widely known for my decades of work at the intersection of Christian faith and LGBTQ issues.

Scroll down for my blog posts on these two topics. In addition:

  • My book Torn is the best introductory resource I know of for Christians who are new to the LGBTQ conversation and want to understand better.
  • You can bring me to speak to your church or group—not only on LGBTQ issues, but also on topics like forgiveness, rebuilding lost faith, and handling division and disagreement.
  • I have an ongoing LGBTQ & Christian video series on YouTube to answer many common questions.
  • For more on the Scripture arguments, my Bible and Homosexuality page offers a deeper dive.
  • When fairy tales blow your mind.

I thought I knew the story of the Ugly Duckling. There was more to the story I didn’t know—and as a gay man, it made me cry.

  • Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Church

In a moment… the horribleness!!! Mwahahahahaaaaaa!!! …but first, a bit of background. This is a post about “Side B” Christians. On this blog, we’ve talked about two Christian positions on same-sex sexual activity. We’ve called them “Side A” and “Side B.” Side A argues that gender isn’t a deciding factor in the morality of a sexual…

  • Worldliness in the opposite direction is still worldliness.

When I was a teenager, I wore a lot of Christian t-shirts. My favorite one had a Christian ichthus fish swimming against the current in the midst of various other fish swimming in the opposite direction. “Go against the flow,” it proclaimed. Here’s a picture of it I found on flickr. The concept, of course,…

  • Simply believing in the existence of God…

Indeed. And what should that change look like? My thoughts tomorrow.

  • A classy response to a terrible event.

This morning, a shooter opened fire at the headquarters of Family Research Council, a conservative Christian political lobbying group with a reputation for being anti-gay. A security guard was wounded in the attack. News reports haven’t yet clarified whether the shooter chose the FRC because he opposed its policies or for some other reason. I…

  • A sad letter from a father to his gay son.

This is why we need to change how Christians view gay people. (This isn’t my letter; the recipient recently posted it online and it’s been making the rounds on social media. However, I know many people who have similar relationships with their parents.)

  • One more comment on Chick-Fil-A from Rachel Held Evans

One more comment on Chick-Fil-A from Rachel Held Evans Okay, I’m tired of the Chick-Fil-A debate, but after reading Rachel’s latest piece on it, I was so impressed by how she works to speak to both sides that I just couldn’t resist posting this link. Thanks, Rachel!

  • The Chick-Fil-A controversy.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on this Chick-Fil-A boycott/controversy thing that’s been in the media lately, and I confess that I’ve had no desire to do so. I just don’t like this controversial stuff; I’d rather talk about what can bring us together than what tears us apart. In this case, not only are…

  • No, I’m not in “the gay lifestyle.” Neither is anyone else.

A few days ago, I was reading a Christian news article about gay people, and I came across this statement: There are those who are struggling with same-sex attraction and are trying to not act on that and then there are those who are celebrating it, who are intentionally living that lifestyle and feeling accepted…

  • Defense is for sports. Not people.

Yesterday, I wrote a silly, fun post, and we had a good chuckle about dumb signs. Today, though, as Mrs. Potato Head might say, I’m putting on my angry eyes. I just finished reading blogger Jared Wilson’s response to a controversy that an earlier blog post of his sparked in the Christian blogosphere. I’ll leave…
